Cobb--I am looking for the cemetery in which my sister Virginia Grace Cobb is buried.  She was born and died around May 15, 1940.  My parents were living in Union, MS at the time.  Newspaper article says the arrangements were made through The Union Funeral Home. Massengale/Massingale, Pullin--Greetings, My name is Lynn Massengale and I am looking for geneology info on my 7th Great Grandparents.  William John Massengale (Massingale) Born 1813 - NC.  Lived in Newton County about 1820-1848.  Moved to Bee County, TX 1848 - died about 187?.  He married Cassie Ann Pullin in Hinds County, MS in 1838.  Their gravestones were wooden and no longer exist in Texas.  On his last census record William states that his mother was born in SC, and Father in VA. They did not ask names.  I wondered if you could tell me what Newspapers existed at this time.  His son, Henry Massengale remained in Newton, and kept us all in MS to this day.  I feel sure that Henry would have published his obituary if possible.  He died sometime after 1870, but did not appear alive in 1878.  Any help is greatly appreciated, Lynn.  shoes@cableone.net    06-04

Brantley--Looking for birth record or census of Newton County showing birth of Jean Brantley to Hubert Brantley and Leona Brantley, March 1, 1924.  I found my wife's grandparents/mother/aunts in the 1930 census do any of you have information, school records,where family lived,where Hubert worked, church they attended?  Brantley, Hubert J. (29), Leona (wife, 28), Ezell (daughter, 12), Hellen (daughter, 9), Bobbie (daughter, 7), Thelma Jean (daughter, 5), Georgia Margarett (daughter, 2 1/2).  Hubert was a farmer, worked/lived on farm owned by brother Whitt Brantley.  Hubert was killed when a mule drawn plow/disc ran over him.  If you know anything about this family please let me know--Hellen is my mother-in-law, can not remember anything about her father, where she lived, which school she attended, etc. Can you help?  Thanks, adj.  johnsonalbertd@bellsouth.net     04-04  05-04

Parks, Felts, Sinclair2--Interested in the Parks family of Newton Co.,MS. William Foster Parks, son of John Parks and Martha Felts, was born 13 May 1829 in Warren County, TN.  Married Margaret Parthena Sinclair 3 Aug 1856.  Children:  James Lafayette Parks born 1858, William Kelly Parks, born in 1875, John (David Warren, Jack) Parks born in 1860, Luther Parks, Aurel Parks, Margaret Parks, Rhonie Parks.  Would like to find out more about the family and children.  William Foster Parks had at least two older brothers, Wiley A. Parks, and James Monroe Parks born in 1818 in TN and ran Parksville Manf. Co., in Lauderdale County Mississippi.  James Monroe Parks fought in the Civil War and afterwards moved his family to Texas around 1875.  His first wife and many of their children are buried in Fellowship Cem. in Jasper County, Mississippi.  James Monroe Parks was my 3rd great grandfather his father was John Parks, born in N.C. moved to TN then on to Mississippi, where he died in 1847.  Would like to make contact with more of their family interested in the Parks family.  Hope to hear from other relatives of the Parks family.  Thanks, Brad R. Washam, Ferguson--I am searching for the family of Thomas Washam born 1815 in TN.  Died in KY.  Married Mary A. Jones, Herrington--Seeking any info on Thomas B. Jones born SC, Nov. 11, 1816, married Elizabeth Herrington on March 02, 1845, in Lauderdale Co., MS.  Thomas and Elizabeth moved to Newton Co., MS, after the 1860 census, they were living in Neshoba Co., MS, at the time of the 1860 census.  Thomas was a school teacher and died in Newton Co., MS, on April 04, 1887, he is buried just inside the gates of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  ellenevans@sbcglobal.net

Holmes, Pride, Purse, Dykes, White, Sinclair, Grayson, Levy, Ash, Williams2--My name is Elizabeth Williams.  I am looking for some of the family members of my great grandparents Dona Pride Holmes (my great grandmother) and her husband Pleas Holmes, Sr.  Dona and Pleas were married on February 4, 1885.  Their children's names were Elizabeth Purse Dykes (my grandmother), Priscilla Homes White, Elnora Holmes SinclairEmma Holmes, Elijah "Buddy" Holmes, Oscar Holmes, Robert Holmes, Eugene Holmes, James E. Holmes, Mattie Holmes, Phillip Holmes, Nathan Holmes, Ottawa "Sane" Holmes, and Pleas Holmes, Jr. (Pleas Jr. was known to play the flute).  The children were born and raised in Pickens and Green County, Alabama. Later, they moved to Sumter County, Alabama in an area called Coatopa, which is located in Livingston, Alabama.  Dona and Pleas Sr. later moved to Delta Mississippi in an area called Glendora Mississippi in Tallahatchie County.  Twelve of the children moved with them (Priscilla, Elnora, Robert, Mattie, Oscar, Pleas Jr., Eugene, Phillip, Nathan, James, Elijah, and Ottaway). Two of the daughters stayed in Alabama (Emma and Elizabeth).  Elizabeth Purse Dykes (my grandmother) had nine children. Their names were Willie Dykes, Frank Dykes, Joseph Dykes, Donnie Dykes Grayson, Susie Dykes Levy, Booker Dykes, Minnie Dykes Ash, Mary Dykes, and Elnora Dykes Williams.  What follows is a list of the people that I mentioned above and what I know of them  thus far:  Dona Pride - Born 1864 in Green or Pickens County,  Alabama. Father's Name - Willie Pride, Mother's Name - Unknown, Parents came from North Carolina.  Dona Pride passed away 1929 in Glendora, Mississippi.  Pleas Holmes Sr. -  Born 1840 in green or Pickens County, Alabama. Parents were from Virginia. Their names are unknown.  Elizabeth Purse - Born 1878 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - William Purse,  Mother's name - Dona Pride, Elizabeth Purse passed away in 1971 at Bryant Whitfield Memorial Hospital - Demopolis, Alabama.  Elijah Holmes - Born 1885 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - Pleas Holmes Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Elijah moved  to Laurel, Mississippi. In Laurel, he established Holmes Restaurant a combination regular meal, short order, confectionary, and soda fountain business.  The date of his death is unknown.  One of his sons (Elijah Holmes, Jr.) was later killed in action during the Korean War.  A short description of these two men has been documented in a book entitled  Laurel, A History of the Black Community, 1882 - 1962, by Cleveland Payne.  Pleas Holmes, Jr. - Born 1888 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - Pleas Holmes, Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi.  Date of death is unknown.  Joseph  Holmes - Born 1890 in Green County, Alabama.  Father?s Name - Pleas Holmes Sr.  Mother?s Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi.  Date of death is unknown.  Nathan Holmes - Born 1891 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - Pleas Holmes Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi.  Date of death is unknown.  Ottaway Holmes - Born 1893 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - Pleas Holmes, Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi.  Date of death is unknown.  Mattie Holmes - Born 1895 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - Pleas Holmes, Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi.  Date of death is unknown.  Elnora Holmes Sinclair -  Born 1897 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father's Name - Pleas Holmes, Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi where she was married.  Date of death is unknown.  Phillip Holmes - Born 1899 in Green or Pickens County, Alabama.  Father?s Name - Pleas Holmes Sr.  Mother's Name - Dona Pride Holmes.  Later moved to Glendora, Mississippi.  Date of death is unknown.  Priscilla Holmes White -  Date of Birth is unknown. Pierce, Munn--I'm searching for Charles Nathan Pierce or Nathan Charles Pierce who went by the name of Nathan Pierce.  I think he was born between
1875 and 1880 in Mississippi.  He married Nora Munn in 1902 in Newton, Mississippi.  I would appreciate any recommendations on census information to order or how to find out more about my "Nathan Pierce."  I did find him and Nora in the 1910 census, but I'd like to go back further and find Nathan's parents.  Thank-you, LeAnn Pierce. Strebeck, Adair2--I would appreciate any information on the family of Annie Strebeck who lived in Newton County, Mississippi in 1870.  She would have been 2 at the time and born in 1868 the daughter of William H. Strebeck and Elilacus ( or Elvira or Elilah) Strebeck.  She may have married James Adair and moved to Louisiana or Alabama.  Siblings may have been Mary M. Strebeck, Evliacus Strebeck, Elisabeth A. Strebeck, Hugh S. Strebeck, Charles W. Strebeck, Benjamin F. Horton--My name is Edward L. Horton.  I am originally from Union, MS.  I am trying to find some of my relatives.  My Granddaddy is George M. Horton from Union.  His Dad was Leonidas B. Norman--I would like to find out information regarding the blacks that were on the plantation of William Norman and/or Willis Norman.  I am particularly interested in Jack Norman and Margaret Norman.  They had a son by the name of Denis Norman, who was 7 months olds at the time of the July 1870 Federal Census.  Denis Norman is my great-grandfather.  Are there any records relative to the blacks of Newton County, Mississippi?  Any help or direction would be appreciated. lfd151@msn.com    02-03

Creighton--I am inquiring about any Creightons with the exact last name spelling, that may be burried in cemeteries in Newton county that date back to 1850. Joseph Creighton is my grandmothers great-great uncle. I cannot find any information about the Creighton's  prior to 1866 when my great-great grandmother was born, her name is Mary Ellen Creighton-Bradley. They may have also had a sister named Mandy or Amanda. If you have any information, I would greatly appreciate your help. Herring/Herrin, Temple, Cooksey--I am trying to find info on a family that lived in Newton Co...1910 census:  William Washington "Will" Herring, wife Nancy (Cooksey) Herring, daughter Sinnie/Sinie Herring [my Mother in law..she married Barney Temple] Mother in law Sally.  Will Herring was born in 1873, he is buried in Tyrone Cemetery in Prentiss, MS.  Wife Nancy [maiden name was Cooksey] is buried at Tyrone Cemetery also.  Sinnie/Sinie was born in Newton County, MS.  I don't know when the family left there.  Trying to find out any info on the Cooksey family and/or Herring family.  On Will's death certificate it says Jackson Herrin was his father.  Any info would be appreciated.  Sandra Temple   taylormade44@earthlink.net    12-02

Loper, James--Looking for information about Virginia Elizabeth Loper family.  Virginia was born on May 5, 1857, in Mississippi.  She married William Issac James born March 9, 1854, in Georga.  They were married on August 26, 1873, in Newton County, Mississippi.  Virginia died on June 13, 1932, and is burried at the Mt. Tangle Wood Plantation--I was wondering if you had any info on a Plantation called Tangle Wood?  My mother has followed my family history and found that one of my great grandfathers owned a Plantation in Newton Co. before the Civil War called  Tangle Wood. Patterson, McCully, Jordan--Looking for information on the John B. Patterson family who moved to Newton Co. from Lincoln Co., NC about 1847.  John B. Patterson (born 1803 NC)  was married to Frances McCully in York Co., SC.  Their children (all born in NC) were: Robert M., Samuel M., James, Isabella, Arincena, William, John, Joseph and David.  John B. Patterson also brought his widowed mother, Isabella Barber Patterson with him to Newton Co.  She is on the 1850 Newton Co. census but disappears after that.  I would very much like to find her gravesite.  This family lived in the Decatur area.  Several sons married into the Lovett Jordan family.  The older sons fought in the civil war with the 13th MS Inf. and 2nd MS Cav.  Most of this family moved to Freestone Co., TX by 1870.  If any one has information on this familly while living in the Newton Co. area, I would very much wish to exchange information.  Bob Patterson PATTERSONB@MCDCSC.ORG
