Payne, Dent, Matthews, Waldrum--Who were the parents of William Absalom Payne ? William Absalom Payne, born March 1866, married on 05 September 1893, to Mollie Whitehead Dent, born 01 June 1869, in Washington County, Alabama. This man is my grandfather. William Absalom Payne appears in the following Alabama Federal Census: 1900 - Washington County, Saint Stephens Precinct: William A. Payne, 34, merchant; Mollie, 31, wife; Wm. A. Payne, Jr., 4; two children born, one survives - no indication of birth/death dates, nor sex of deceased child. 1910 - Mobile County, Mobile, 2nd Ward: William A. Payne, 44, merchant-produce; Mollie D., 40, wife, boarding proprietor; William A., Jr., 14, son; Warrene Payne, 9, daughter; Lola B. Dent, 55, sister-in-law. William Absalom Payne died 02 May 1910, in Mobile and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery. To date, no information has been discovered that would link him to his family. There are no known surviving family members other than myself. Joseph E. Payne, born 29 July 1862, married on 21 February 1883 to Sophronia Alice Mathews, born 16 June 1859, in Clarke County, Alabama. Sophronia Alice was the daughter of David McLeod Mathews and Rebecca Waldrum. She appears with her Mathews family in the following Clarke County Federal Census: 1860 - David Mathews, 34; Rebecca, 38; Ellen E. Matthews, 11; Celia A., 10; James W., 7; Mary E., 5; Rebecca A. Matthews, 3; Sophronia A., 1. 1870 - Rebecca Mathews (widowed), 48; Ellen E., 21; Celia Ann Matthews, 20; James Waldrum Matthews, 17; Mary Evaline Matthews, 15; Sophronia Alice Matthews, 11; David Henry Matthews, 9; Marion J. Matthews, 8. 1880 - Rebecca Mathews, 59; Mollie, 25; Alice, 22; Henry, 18; Mary, 17. Sophronia Alice Mathews Payne appears in the following Clarke County Federal Census: 1920 - Joseph E. Payne, 59 (actually is 57); Alice, 60; 19 year old daughter whose name is illegible. It is suspected, but not yet proven, that Joseph and William are brothers. The 1880 Federal Census, Alabama, Clarke County, McLeod's Beat, shows J. E. Payne, head of household, 18 years, farm laborer, Alabama birth and Wm. A. Payne, brother, 14 years, farm laborer, Alabama birth. It appears these boys were orphaned or left home at an early age. Efforts to establish the existence of these two young men prior to 1880 have not been successful. William Patterson Payne, Texas. wpayne@nbtx.com 09-04
McIlwain--I am planning a trip to Washington County, AL, sometime in September. My 4th great grandparents, Andrew McIlwain and Margaret McIlwain, are buried there. He was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War. He died May 31,1829. Do you have any type of maps or directions to their plot? Is your cemetery 'Old Escatawpa Cemetery' easy to find? Thank you for your time. Peggy Vanyo. vanyoep2004@gra.midco.net 05-04

Conway, Howard--Does anyone know if Capt. George Conway is buried in the St. Stephens Cemetery? Our records show that he died in St. Stephens, AL, on 11 Dec 1827, but we can not find his grave. His wife Sarah Newbold Howard Conway is buried in Mobile (died Dec. 1884). Also does anyone know if Capt. Conway lived in St. Stephens? Family history says he was a Customs Collector, but I have not found any information to support this. Thank you, Lyle D. Bishop III. tazzama60@boone.net 01-04

O'Niel, Bolton, Hinson, Steinweinder--I have Harry J O'Niel and Isabella "Belle" Bolton O'Niel. They were married in Clarke County, MS., in 1880, July 4th. By 1885 she was remarried to Jackson Levi Hinson. The Hinson has been spelled other ways. What I am trying to find is the divorce record of Isabella "Belle" O'Niel and Harry O'Niel. The O'Niel has also been spelled in different ways. I have narrowed the divorce time frame down to 1882-1885. She and Jack had a child in 1884. I have checked with the group in Clarke County, MS., and Bennie could not find it in Vol. #1, 1882-1884. The only other place I know to look now is in Al. Harry O'Niel and Isabella were married by Rev. Steinweinder. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Mary S Perkins miimii4@worldnet.att.net 4-03

Deer Park cemeteries--Is there an address available to write to cemeteries for information on burials? I am pretty sure that my great-grandfather is buried somewhere in that vicinity. I found him and his wife in the 1910 census as living in Deer Park Pct., and it seems fairly reasonable that he would be buried somewhere near there. Any information would be appreciated.
